☕ J-Curve Prevalence in Our Lives
Friday: Mental Model / Big Idea — The J-curve is everywhere, and we would be better to remember it often.
J-Curve is when there’s a decline immediately after starting, then a steep increase following:
There are many implications to it, but the main ones are:
We tend to think the trough doesn’t apply to us
We underestimate how long the trough lasts
We underestimate how high the tail goes in the end
We tend to think we are the only ones experiencing the trough (because we also tend to not share struggles on social media, only wins)
The J-curve is also everywhere in investing, business, venture capital, relationships, and more. However, it’s important to beware of overfitting. Not everything needs a decline before improvement.
That’s it for today. I hope you make this Friday a great one.
